His meditation path began in 1952 with several readings: The Quest of the Overself by Paul Brunton; Truth is One; and the Miracle of Mindfulness and then a meeting and practice with his spiritual teacher Rev. Gyomay Kubose. Other meetings of spiritual significance were with Thich Nhat Hanh, Chân Khône, Krishnamurti, Seung Sahn, Joseph Campbell, Koyo Kubose, Annibel Laity, Toni Packer, and Varasak Varadhammo.

In the fall of 2014, it was found that Richard Charles (Zenyo) Brandon had a brain tumor, after his surgery it was discovered that the type of cancer that he had was an aggressive form of cancer known as GBM. Given the 4 to 6 months to live grim prognosis, one of the questions that his family asked of him was what he would like to see happen to Bright Dawn Home Spread. Richard Charles (Zenyo) Brandon was very clear in that he’d like to keep the retreat center going. As such, this website, and indeed Bright Dawn Home Spread is also a living legacy in honor of Richard Charles (Zenyo) Brandon’s passion and desire that all who wish to live in the present moment can do so at Bright Dawn Home Spread.
